It is the southernmost island of the group. The people who live on this Lakshadweep Island no doubt constitute socially, linguistically and ethnographically yet they are quite distinct form the human group inhabiting other islands of the Union territory. The people living on all other islands have more than one similarity among them but they have no common traits with the Minicoyites. In fact the latter as nearer to the Maldives than others.

A very extensive lagoon surrounds the island of Minicoy but the projecting rocks make it treacherous since at times the boats, ferries and steamers get collided with them. The island enjoys the distinction of being the first Island of Lakshadweep group to be electrified as early as 1962. Of all the islands, however, it is the island of Minicoy, which is unique and should never be missed when on Lakshadweep beach tour.

The island of Kalpeni owes its present shape to the severe cyclonic storm that overlook it more than a century ago, i.e. in 1847. Earlier it had a different shape. The neighbouring island of Cheriam was the part of this island but the cyclonic storm under reference separated it from the Kalpeni. The Cheriam is now a un-inhabitant island. The waters surrounding this Lakshadweep Island are a haven for different varieties of Fish, Seer Fish, Skate and Shark are the major types of fish abounding these waters and is a must visited place when on a Lakshadweep Island tour. This is the only Island of Lakshadweep that has no lagoon and has also an east-west posture as opposed to the north-south layout of all other islands. Otherwise the island occupies a whole of citoll. The tomb of Ubaidulla, a Muslim saint dearly venerated by Muslims all over the Union Territory is located on this island. In a way Andrott is the Mecca for Lakshadweep Muslims. It is also famed for its Mosque, popularly called Ubaidulla mosque, the oldest mosque of the Union Territory.

Kavaratti Island

It is the island of Kavaratti which by virtue of its statue as the capital of the Union Territory has become a hub of social, economic and aother allied activities. It is a centrally located Lakshadweep island in the main cluster of the islands. Thus keeping in view the functional convenience the island has been made the administrative headquarters of the Union Territory. The island is located within a coral reef and is adjacent to an extensive lagoon. On the whole Kavaratti is the most diversified and picturesque island of Lakshadweep. The island has two important Islamic shrines named as Jamath and Ujjara. When on a Lakshadweep Island tour a must visit place is these two shrines famed for their wood work.

The island of Agatti adjoins a very beautiful lagoon. The lagoon is characterized with transluscent turquoise waters and fish bearing different colors and hues render a very charming view for the human eye. Whereas the Minicoy is the southernmost Island of Lakshadweep, the Agatti is the western most island of the group and hence marks the western extremity of the Indian Union. The highest temperatures recorded so far in the Union Territory (35°C) have been recorded on the Agatti. The people of this island are rated as first rate reciters of the Holy Quran and also expert in embroidering typical Muslim caps.

When on a Lakshadweep beach tour to Agatti you can also visit the a tuna fish canning factory that has been set up here. Like the island of Andrott, Agatti has also a unique distinction of its own.

The Kadmat is a club shaped island. It also adjoins quite a beautiful lagoon wherein a variety of fish, corals and shells of different shapes present a diversified and magnificent spectacle. In the central section of this island are found the solid lime stones strata. It is composed of coral stone and is used for building purposes.

The Amini Island is that which is completely surrounded by a lagoon. From a reasonable distance it appears that the island is situated exactly in the centre of lagoon. It is among those which were first to be occupied by the immigrants from the mainland. The maximum number of mosques, i.e. 45, among all these islands is found on this island. Thus the island enjoys a rare socio-cultural significance for the islanders of the entire Union Territory.

Bitra is a very lovely and tiny island. It is the smallest inhabited Island of Lakshadweep and in all possibility on the globe as a whole. However, this tiny island has the largest lagoon among all the islands of the group. The large and magnificent lagoon characterized with crystal clear and calm waters make Bitra, a jewel among all the islands of the group. In its charm and attraction, it is no less than the Hawaii islands.

Chetlat is the northern most inhabitant island and resembles an old country boat island in its shape. The island stands on the eastern section of an atoll and it has an extensive shoal. It adjoins quite an extensive lagoon which has only one entrance. Lagoon is enclosed by a coral ledge. Chetalt is also known for the production of a very fine variety of Coir. Again after Minicoy, the island of Chetlat is the second major sea fishing island of Lakshadweep and is a must visit destination when on a Lakshadweep Island tour. The people of these islands have been very expert and adept boat builders who once supplied boats to all the islands of the group.

Malayalam is the most common language used by the tribes of Lakshadweep.

Tuna, coir making, vinegar, jaggery and copra making are the main industry in the islands. Coconut is the only crop which is grown on these islands. It is, however, the coir that constitutes the backbone of the economy and it was coir alone for which natives were exploited even by outsiders at times. The coir obtained from the coconut is retted in the adjoining lagoons of all islands. After coconut plantations fishing is an other important activity of Lakshadweep islands. Fishing and coconut also provide a major part of the food of these people. Moreover, these two goods when exported bring in revenue for the purchase of rice and other consumer goods.

Although boat making no longer exists, traditional boat making skills still exists in some part of the island.
Art and Crafts

Today, the arts and crafts of this sedate territory has got a splendid boost since tourism has picked up in Lakshadweep. Coir products have started seeing the outside world since the tourists take them to the corners of globe. Beautifully crafted items and jewellery made out of coir are widely made and used in the island. Corals, shells and oyster are widely used in jewellery and decorative items. While on a Lakshadweep touryou can buy these handicrafts items from street side and beach stalls.

Music and Dance

The culture of Lakshadweep is reflected in the Music and dance. The music and dance is highly influenced by Islam culture. One can get to hear the enchanting Lakshadweep music during the festivities or during social occasions as in birth and marriages. This is also the time when one get to see the colorful tribal dances.

The leading folk dance of Lakshadweep is called Kolkali. This dance is meant for different occasions and thus has different variants Velakali, Oachirakali and Parichakali are its principal forms. The Dikar is a religious dance in which in no case less than ten persons participate. This dance of Lakshadweep is almost similar to the Aravana dance of the Moplah Muslims of the Malabar region. Thara and Adal are other important dances of these islands. ‘Opana’ a Muslim dance performed in Kerala is also performed here by the tribes at the time of marriages.

Folk songs are an inseparable part of the Lakshadweep social order. On like folk dances the folk songs are sung both by the males and females. Folk songs for marriage, ear boring occasion circumcisen religious occasions and other such events have been designed separately. Their folk songs also reflect the daily chores of the people. Oppana songs were primarily composed for the procession that goes to search the bridegroom some days after the nikah ceremony. However, now these songs are also sung in some group sitting as pastime. Apart from the folk songs, the boat songs of these islands have a peculiarity of their own. These fold songs are quite melodious and have a rhythmic flow and undoubtedly assist in whiling away the boredom of the seafaring activities pursued on the open seas away from homes and coasts.

Lakshadweep Cuisine

Coconut, fish and rice are the principal items in the staple diet of the Minicoyites. Rice is imported from the mainland in exchange for coir. Mas making i.e., processing of tuna fish is the largest earning device of the people. Jaggery and vinegar are also prepared from coconut water and copra and are consumed as a part of the diet.

Vegetarian and non vegetarian served here have similarity with Kerala cuisines. The restaurants here apart from serving local cuisines serve continental delicacies too. While on a Lakshadweep tour one must try the sea food.

Dress and Ornaments

The dress of men consists of a tight pyjama which is tight about the ankles. Over the trousers, usually white dhoti is strapped around the waist which falls only up to knees. The upper part of the body is generally kept bare but of late some people have started putting on banyans. However, every adult male uses a turban as his head gear. Women of the island are the most artistically dressed females of Lakshadweep. Libu i.e. a long gown like apparel running from shoulders to ankles is the major garment of the women. While the women of the higher sections use silken robes, those hailing from low classes have to be contented with a coarse cloth of the same color. The headgear of the women is called Phatugan.

With regard to ornaments, there are some restrictions. Monikkas can use gold ornaments while Bifans can no doubt wear golden ornaments but cannot use golden ear tops. The Bibis can have only silver ornaments. The Kambilos i.e. womenfolk of the lowest section can use only ear-rings and ear-tops that are made of either copper or steel.

Religion wise 94.6 percent of the people living in these ten islands, as per 1981 census data, professed Islam as their faith. Before the people from the mainland were migrated to these islands to man and manage the projects and schemes related to the development of these islands, the Lakshadweep must have been Muslims in its religious composition. However, the numbers of Hindus over the years have been rising and so has been the fate of the Christians. So far no Buddhists have entered the islands although historically these islands had been in interaction with Buddhism in their remote past.

Among the immigrants there are people who speak Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya and even Bangala. The Minicoyities are the only people who do not speak read and write the Malayali Language or any of its variants. The rest of the islanders speak Malayali. No wonder the Malayali spoken in Lakshadweep carries many Tamil words which distinctly show the influence of Tamil on this region. The Malayali spoken in Lakshadweep also carriers in it the words of Urdu and Arabic languages. But the main language in Lakshadweep is Malayalam that is spoken by a majority of the people.

Zikkar, Id-ul-Fitar and Id-ul-Zuha are the three most important festivals in Lakshadweep. Both the Id’s are celebrated on these islands in the same manner as by their Muslim brethren anywhere on the mainland. They also take put the Tajia processions. However, it is the festival of Zikkar that is exclusively celebrated on these islands in its own way. These festivals in Lakshadweep are celebrated to commemorate the memory of a religious leader and Saint Sayyad Ahmed Kabir who lived and preached on this archipelago.
