Ranthambore History

Ranthambore Fort spread in area of 4.5 Km2. In ruins of the fort is hiding the tale of its existence. It is considered that fort was built by King Jayant of Chauhan Dynasty around 1110 AD. However, some says King Sapaldaksha built the city in the year 944 AD. During the year 1754 Ranthambore National Park Fort was ruled by Ahmed Shah. Sawai Madho Singh requested him to check the incursion of Marathas but he refused. Angered Sawai Madho Singh fortified the settlement of Sherpur and later named it as Sawai Madhopur. Sawai Madhopur is now a well flourished town and 14 Kms far from Ranthambore Fort. The fort which was once protected by 7 Kms long wall, where several battles were fought now wildlife roams around it. Tiger peeks into the narrow passage of the fort. Ranthambore Fort appears like manmade house for wildlife.

Geography & Culture Ranthambore

Ranthambore Tiger Reserve encompasses the dry deciduous Anogeissus Pendula, a forest type which was once present all over India but now intact in Rajasthan only. The inclusion of Vinghyan hills has broadened the bio diversity of Ranthambore National Park which covers the area of 392 km². Besides tiger around 320 species of birds, 40 specious of reptiles, 40 species of mammals and above 300 species of plants are nestled around it.

Forests The dry deciduous forest of park has attribute of Anogeissus Pendula, a kind of tree species. The diversify flora of park can be measure by 539 different species of flowering plants.

Tigers - They are the main attraction of the park. Ranthambore National Park is the best place in country to spot Tiger. These majestic predators can be seen roaming carelessly even in the afternoon.

Exotic Species - Ranthambore is home to myriad species apart from tiger including leopard, wild boar, sambar, chital, sloth bear, nilgai and hyena.

Ranthambore Fort - This magnificent structure was built in 944 AD. It encircles the entire park and housed three main red Karauli stone temples constructed around 12th and 13th centuries dedicated to Shiva, Ganesh and Ramlala ji.

Padam Talao - The largest lake of the park built from red sandstone features Jogi Mahal and huge banyan tree on its edge.
